General Principles for Stewarding the Building and Property

General Principles for Stewarding the Building and Property

  • God gives us the Church property to steward for the sake of the Gospel. The goal of our stewardship is to, as much as possible, allow the property to be used for wholesome events that do not oppose Christ or the directly hinder the congregation’s mission.
  • Because of our freedom in Christ, Gift of Grace congregation does not espouse any political ideology.  Events held on this property do not imply any kind of endorsement.
  • Decisions about what events can and cannot occur on this property are made not by rules, but by discerning the best stewardship based on Christian care and concern for the congregation and the larger community.  We assume goodwill and good faith on the part of the members and friends of Gift of Grace.
  • We distinguish between events that occur on Gift of Grace property and events that are sponsored by Gift of Grace congregation. Events that are sponsored by Gift of Grace are events supported by Gift of Grace resources, like money, staff time and advertising.
  • We consider receiving “rent” that helps defray costs to Gift of Grace as part of proper stewardship.
  • We make a distinction between rentals that we subsidize on one end of the spectrum and those we do not subsidize on the other end. Some are subsidized more, some less, some not at all.
  • We approach all rentals in a spirit of win/win. Money is not the only or even the main win for us. Honest relationship in community is the key, according the  example of the Macedonian and Corinthian Churches the mission and the means of the parties involved come into play.
  • We prioritize rental situations that keep options open for Gift of Grace congregations future ministry and maneuvering for ministry.
  • The person in charge of building management (currently Pastor Fecher) is entrusted with the responsibility for building use as follows:
  1. S/he will decide and report to the Steering Team regarding events that occur in the church building, but are not sponsored by Gift of Grace. In discerning any questionable cases s/he will seek the help of another steering team member.
  2. If an event requires Gift of Grace resources and support (beyond simple building use) s/he will discern with the help of a Steering Team member. If there is potential controversy or if many resources are required, s/he will seek consensus from the Steering Team.
